What is NovelAI?

NovelAI, often searched as Novel AI, is an AI writing and image service made by Anlatan Inc. Its documentation describes "an AI driven anime image generator and storytelling tool for anyone that desires to create and build their own stories and works of anime inspired art," and its homepage calls the story side "a story generator built to write with you, not for you." NovelAI launched in June 2021 as a storytelling service and added image generation in October 2022.

You write in the Editor, press Send, and the AI continues your text. Every input and generation is saved in an edit history that works like a branching timeline, so Retry gives you a fresh output and Undo and Redo move you through it. Lorebook entries describe your characters, places, factions and objects, and each one joins the AI's context when it comes up in the story. Stories also carry a Memory and an Author's Note, the Writer's Toolbox can rewrite, transform, expand or condense any passage you select, and Text Adventure mode turns your input into Do actions and Say dialogue. Text to Speech reads your story aloud, and user scripts, introduced in December 2025, add tools, inventory systems or small games written in JavaScript or TypeScript.

GLM-4.6, the open model NovelAI rolled out to every tier and the free trial in October 2025, writes for everyone. Opus subscribers also get Xialong, NovelAI's 355-billion-parameter storytelling finetune of GLM-4.6, released on 31 March 2026, and Erato. NovelAI's own Kayra stays in the list, while the legacy Genji, Krake and Snek models leave novelai.net on 20 November 2026. Your stories are encrypted in your browser before they reach NovelAI's servers, so only you can read them, and they export as .story and .scenario files. The interface comes in English and Japanese.

How to use NovelAI online on a PC or phone

NovelAI runs on any computer or phone with an up-to-date browser and a stable internet connection. There's nothing to download, and it doesn't work offline.

1. Open novelai.net and choose Write Stories for the story editor or Generate Images for the image generator.
2. Register with an email address and password, or with Sign in with Google, and confirm your email to unlock the free trial.
3. To write, start a new story from a blank page or one of the ready-made scenarios, write your opening and press Send, or Ctrl + Enter (⌘ + Enter on a Mac).
4. Steer the story. Retry gives you a new version of the last output, Undo and Redo step through the history, and you can click into any part of the text and change it.
5. For a game-style story, choose Text Adventure on a new story, then type actions with Do and lines of dialogue with Say.

Stories saved to server storage, the default, follow your account to every device. Local storage keeps a story in one browser only, and clearing that browser's cache deletes it.

NovelAI login

1. Open the NovelAI login page.
2. Enter your email and password, or use Sign in with Google.
3. New to NovelAI? Register with an email and password, then confirm the email NovelAI sends you.

Your password does more than sign you in: NovelAI uses it to encrypt your stories in your browser. That's why Reset Password permanently deletes the stories, presets and AI Modules stored on its servers, which Anlatan can't read or recover. Download everything first from User Settings → Account → Download All Stories, and do the same before you change your email or password. If you signed up with Google, NovelAI asks you to create a separate password to encrypt your stories, and its account recovery doesn't cover accounts created with Sign in with Google. If you can't verify your email, NovelAI asks you to contact support@novelai.net.

Is there a NovelAI app?

Not in the app stores. Anlatan publishes no NovelAI app in the App Store or Google Play. Its FAQ answers the app question with your phone's browser and the site's Progressive Web App, which you install straight from novelai.net: choose Add to home screen in Chrome or install it from the site in Firefox, and other mobile browsers offer a similar option. Apps named NovelAI or Novel AI in the App Store are published by other developers, not Anlatan.

Anlatan also built AetherRoom, a separate chatbot project, and formally cancelled it on 8 May 2026 to put its energy into NovelAI.

Is NovelAI free? Plans and prices

Only through its trial. NovelAI's FAQ says there are no plans for a free version. Instead, a free account with a verified email gets one trial, called Paper: 50 text generations, 30 images up to 1024×1024 and 100 Text to Speech generations. The trial doesn't refresh, and your stories and settings carry over when you subscribe.

Story context is how much of your story the AI reads before it writes; the figures are for GLM-4.6 and Xialong, and each tier adds a rollover window on top. Every paid tier includes unlimited Text to Speech.

Anlas is NovelAI's image currency, and image generation is the only thing it pays for. Subscription Anlas refill to your tier's amount at each renewal, and since 22 September 2026 they reset to zero when your subscription ends. Subscribers can buy Paid Anlas with the + button beside the balance; Paid Anlas never expire and are spent after your Subscription Anlas. Opus is the tier for heavy image use. NovelAI says its 10,000 monthly Anlas would cost $14 on their own, and its free NovelAI Diffusion V5 generations draw on a bar that recharges continuously, about 7,000 images a month at the default 23 steps. When the bar runs dry, an Opus Usage Boost adds 100% more V5 usage for $5.99.

Plans renew exactly 30 days after payment. If you cancel, you keep your tier until the paid period ends, and Anlatan's terms say subscriptions aren't refunded unless the company grants it. Prices are in US dollars, and you change your plan from User Settings → Account → Manage.

NovelAI image generator

NovelAI's image generator makes anime-style art from a text prompt at novelai.net/image. Its newest model, NovelAI Diffusion V5, arrived on 21 August 2026 in two versions for every paid tier. V5 Curated is trained on a cleaner, more focused image set and is NovelAI's pick when you want to be sure nothing sensitive appears by accident. V5 Full is trained on a broader, less curated set. V5 reads natural-language prompts as well as tags, officially takes prompts in English and Japanese, places up to 22 distinct characters in one image, renders English, Japanese and Chinese text, makes transparent backgrounds and draws a full paneled comic page in a single generation. V4.5 and earlier models stay in the model list.

Inpaint repaints part of an image; Director Tools change details, clothing, lighting or a pose; Vibe Transfer and Precise Reference carry a character or a style over from a reference image; and the Canvas, Enhance and Upscale tools finish the picture. NovelAI doesn't store your generations: they last for your session only, so download them, or the whole session as a .zip, before you leave the page. NovelAI claims no ownership of your images and sets no limits on commercial use. To share them, NovelAI Explore, launched on 15 July 2026, is an opt-in community gallery inside NovelAI, and every post passes a manual review.

Is NovelAI down?

Check status.novelai.net, NovelAI's live status page, first. It tracks the Website, Image Generation, Text Generation, Login, Payments and NovelAI Explore separately, lists upcoming maintenance and recent incidents, and has a Report Issue link. NovelAI age rules

You must be 18 or older, and able to enter a legal contract in the United States, to use NovelAI. That's section 5.2 of Anlatan's Terms of Service, effective 8 December 2025. NovelAI has no app in the App Store or Google Play, so it carries no store age rating. In the image generator, V5 Curated is the model NovelAI recommends when you want nothing sensitive to appear by accident, and its docs call Curated the safest choice for streaming.

Teasa is for ages 13 and up, and its Stories are written by creators with a cast, an opening and quests.
