What is Chai AI?

Chai describes itself as a social AI platform where anyone can create their own AI character and share it with the world. Its library holds over 25 million user-created characters built for social chatting and roleplay, and Chai's FAQ says the characters and conversations come from the Chai community, not from the Chai team. In the app you can switch on safety filters that hide mature content in search, hide explicit messages and block specific characters, and you can report any character or message anonymously.

Chai is made by Chai Research Corp., a Delaware corporation based in Palo Alto, California. William Beauchamp, a former quantitative trader, founded it in 2021. Chai Research says its annualized revenue reached $120 million on 1 October 2026 and that more than a million people use Chai every day. The old address chai.ml now redirects to the company site, chai-research.com.

How to use Chai AI online or on a PC

Chai has no Windows or Mac app: Chai Research links only its iPhone and Android apps. On a PC, Mac or Chromebook, the way in is the website, chai-ai.com, and Chai's FAQ says the same site works in any phone browser with no download needed.

1. Open chai-ai.com in your browser.
2. Sign in with your Google account. Chai's FAQ says you can chat with AI characters as soon as you've signed up.
3. Pick a character and send your first message.

Chai calls Chai Web and the Chai App separate platforms with no data sharing between the two, so chats you started in the app don't appear on the website, and Chai Web Pro is its own subscription. Chai's FAQ adds that each reply to a Chai Web Pro subscriber gets eight times the compute an average app user's reply gets.

Chai AI login

1. On a computer or in a phone browser, open chai-ai.com and sign in with Google, the sign-in Chai's FAQ gives for the website.
2. In the Android app, or an iPhone app that's already installed, sign in with Google, Facebook or Apple. Chai's privacy policy lists those three for creating an app account.
3. Use the same method each time so you land in the same account.

Because the website and the app don't share data, a web login won't bring up your app chats. To cancel Chai Pro on the web, open your account settings: you keep Pro until the end of the billing period, and Chai's terms say payments are non-refundable except where the law requires otherwise. Is there a Chai app?

Yes, on Android. Chai: Chat AI Platform from Chai Research is on Google Play. On iPhone and iPad, the App Store listing, CHAI: Social AI Platform- Chat, has been unavailable when checked on 26 October 2026. Chai's founder wrote on r/ChaiApp that the team is working on improving its Apple app and that anyone who already has it installed is unaffected; on 26 October 2026 the listing still showed no app in the US, UK and French App Stores.

The Google Play app contains ads and in-app purchases. Prefer not to install anything? chai-ai.com runs in any phone browser, iPhone included, with Google sign-in.

Is Chai AI free? Plans and prices

Yes, to start. Chai's FAQ says you can chat with AI characters right after signing up with Google, and that Pro unlocks endless conversations, faster responses and Chai's most advanced AI models. These are the prices on chai-ai.com on 26 October 2026:

The app runs on its own currency. Since September 2026, every message in the app costs pieces, which also pay for image and video generation. Chai's founder announced on r/ChaiApp that from 6 October 2026 every user gets 70 free pieces a day from the daily check-in, about 70 messages on the default model, and watching an ad earns 5 more. The app's paid plans and piece packs are separate from Chai Web Pro.

Chai AI age rules

Chai is for adults only. Its end-user license agreement, last updated 28 July 2026, restricts it to users aged 18 and older who are legal adults where they live and have provided accurate age verification. Its Safety Center says users under 18 are not permitted, and Chai's FAQ says the platform is designed for adults and not intended for minors.

Chai checks age with a quick selfie that estimates whether you're over 18, or with a government-issued photo ID, and in some regions it requires a paid subscription. Its Safety Center says Chai refuses to generate sexually explicit content, self-harm content and any content that sexualises minors, and scans messages in real time for self-harm. Google Play rates the Android app Mature 17+ for violence, sexual themes, drugs and alcohol, strong language and crude humor.
