An OC, short for original character, is a character you invent yourself instead of borrowing one from a book, anime or game. Fans make OCs to write stories, draw, roleplay and insert themselves into worlds they love. A good OC is more than a look: they want something, something stands in their way, and they sound like nobody else when they talk.

How to make an OC in six steps

Start with a hook. One line that makes someone curious: "the lighthouse keeper who knows your name" beats "a mysterious girl".
Give them a want they can act on today. "Keep the light burning until her brother's ship comes home" gives every scene a direction.
Put something in the way. The obstacle creates the story: the council wants the lighthouse closed, and she has been forging the reports.
Write how they talk, not just what they are. "Short sentences, answers questions with questions" is playable; "mysterious" is not.
Decide how they know you. A relationship with tension (you are the inspector the council sent) makes the first message matter.
Open with an action and a line. "*Wren does not open the door all the way.* 'You're early, Inspector. The storm isn't.'" gives the other person something to answer.

Vague versus playable

Vague: Wren is mysterious, pretty and protective.
Playable: Wren wants the light kept burning, is hiding forged reports from the council, speaks in short questions and has already read your file.

The playable version gives a motive, a secret, a voice and a reason to talk to you. Those four details are what a roleplay partner or an AI character needs to stay in character.

Pick an archetype

Archetypes are shorthand, not a cage. Choose one to set the first impression, then give your OC a want and a secret that surprise people.

Tsundere: Cold or prickly on the surface, obviously soft underneath; they deny caring while showing up anyway.
Kuudere: Calm, cool and hard to read; warmth arrives in small, deliberate gestures.
Dandere: Quiet and shy with most people; talkative and funny once they trust you.
Yandere: Sweet devotion that tips into possessiveness; a fictional intensity your character can push back on.
Deredere: Openly warm, affectionate and cheerful from the first scene.
Rival: Wants the same prize you do and respects you more than they admit.
Protector: Puts themselves between you and trouble, often before you ask.
Trickster: Charming, unpredictable and always two jokes ahead of the conversation.
Mentor: Knows more than they say and teaches by letting you try first.
Rogue: Lives by their own rules, keeps secrets, and has a code nobody expects.
