What is HammerAI?

HammerAI is a platform for chatting with AI characters, writing stories with AI and generating images. Its home page calls it an "AI character chat and roleplay platform" and leads with three promises: free, private and local. Chats with community-made characters, stories you co-write and can publish, group chats with up to ten characters, lorebooks and personas are all on the free plan, and paid plans add cloud image generation and text-to-speech.

HammerAI is a small operation. Its pricing page says one developer builds it as a passion project, and its App Store listing adds a small contracting team. Both app stores name the developer as Sunspot LLC of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and HammerAI's terms cover the website, the desktop app and its Discord and Reddit communities.

What sets HammerAI apart is where the model runs. On the web and in the phone apps, replies come from cloud models on HammerAI's servers. In the desktop app you can also run a model locally through Ollama and llama.cpp, and HammerAI says those messages never leave your computer. Every plan can also connect an outside model through a proxy to its API.

How to use Hammer AI online or on desktop

HammerAI's FAQ describes two ways in: the website gives you cloud models, and the desktop app adds local models that run on your own device, offline included.

In your browser. The web app works in Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge on a PC, Mac, Chromebook or phone.

1. Open hammerai.com and browse Characters, sorted by most liked or narrowed by tag, or open Stories.
2. Choose Sign In. Every model on HammerAI's website is a cloud model, and cloud models need a free account, which HammerAI says helps it fight abuse.
3. Open a character and write your first message, or choose Write Story to co-write a story with the AI.

On your computer. The desktop app is free, and local models need no login and no setup.

1. Open hammerai.com/desktop and pick your system: Windows, macOS on Apple Silicon, or Linux as a .deb, .rpm or Flatpak package. The files come from HammerAI's GitHub releases page, where version 1.0.78 arrived on 15 October 2026.
2. Install and open the app. It packages Ollama, which detects and configures an Nvidia, AMD, Intel or Apple GPU automatically.
3. Choose one of the more than 20 local models and start chatting. Once a model is downloaded, the app works with no internet connection; cloud models, image generation and text-to-speech still need one.

Hammer AI login

1. Open hammerai.com and choose Sign In, then Sign Up for a new account or Login for an existing one.
2. Continue with Google, Discord or Apple, sign in with your email and a password, or enter your phone number to get a one-time code.
3. Use the same method each time so you land in the same account. Your account, subscription and cloud chats then sync across the website, the desktop app and the phone apps.

Email accounts confirm their address first, and Forgot your password? sends a reset link. In the desktop app, Sign In opens the HammerAI website, and you can paste an authorization code back into the app if it doesn't return on its own. When you sign in, HammerAI syncs the characters and stories you made on that device to your cloud account. To delete an account, sign in and open the Account tab of your profile: deletion is permanent, and local chats stay on your device.

Is there a Hammer AI app?

Yes. HammerAI is on the App Store for iPhone and iPad and on Google Play for Android. Its mobile page says the apps carry the same features as the website, from character chat and story writing to group chats, lorebooks, personas and image generation, and that chats and characters stay on your phone by default.

Both apps need an account. The iPhone app's 1 October update requires a login, which HammerAI says prevents abuse, and the Google Play listing says the app requires an account and is meant for adults 18 and over. In the App Store, Starter costs $8.99 a month, Advanced $17.99 and Ultimate $34.99, with weekly plans from $2.49 and Ultimate at $94.99 a quarter; manage an app subscription in your phone's settings.

Prefer not to install anything? hammerai.com runs in any phone browser, and HammerAI's desktop app is the only version that runs models locally.

Is Hammer AI free? Plans and prices

Yes. HammerAI says its core features are free. The free plan covers every local model in the desktop app, a proxy to any outside model API, group chats, lorebooks and personas, and 600 cloud messages a day on two cloud models with 8,192 tokens of context, which is how much of the conversation a character can work with at once. Free accounts on the website see ads, and HammerAI's privacy policy, updated 16 October 2026, says those ads are chosen using recent chat content; every paid plan removes them, and the desktop app has none.

Paid plans also add automatic conversation memory through rolling summaries, cloud image generation from 26 image models, text-to-speech with 746 voices in 34 languages, a private Discord channel and prioritized feature requests. Credits pay for images and voice: 10 credits an image and 5 a text-to-speech clip. Monthly credits don't roll over, while one-time packs, from $1.99 for 200 credits to $99.99 for 20,000, never expire.

Web plans are billed through Gank, where Manage on your plan lets you cancel, pause or change it. Upgrades charge the prorated difference, and downgrades take effect at the end of the billing period. HammerAI's pricing page says all purchases are final, because Gank doesn't support refunds.

Hammer AI age rules

HammerAI is for adults only. Its terms of service, last updated 29 May 2026, say the service may only be used by people who are at least 18, or the age of consent where they live if that is higher, and its compliance page says every user must confirm they meet that age before using it. Its privacy policy says HammerAI is not intended for anyone under 18.

Its content guidelines, updated 7 April 2026, require every character to be 18 or older and remove any character that is or looks underage. Creators mark characters and stories Safe, for general audiences, or Mature, and a setting decides whether mature content shows anywhere in the app. The App Store rates the iPhone app 18+, and Google Play rates the Android app Mature 17+, with a listing that says it is meant for adults 18 and over.

Teasa is rated 13+. Its Stories are written in the register of the romance and fantasy novels on a library shelf, every Story in the catalog is reviewed before it's published, and there is no unfiltered mode to switch on.
