• Too Cocky to Be a Hero: a bored god dropped you and a self-declared hero into the same fantasy world. He has just cornered you at the guild, sure you're stealing his spotlight, while his four companions watch. 15 quests.

What is AI Dungeon?

AI Dungeon is an AI text adventure game made by Latitude, Inc. Its official site calls it "a free AI text adventure game where players create open-ended stories, explore interactive worlds, and guide every choice online or in the app," and its help guide describes "an AI-guided role play experience and interactive storytelling tool." Nick Walton built the first version in 2019, and Latitude now runs AI Dungeon alongside Voyage, its AI RPG platform with health, inventory, quests and progression built in. One Latitude account signs you in to both.

You start an Adventure with a Quick Start, choosing a setting, a character and a name while the AI fills in the rest, or from one of the community Scenarios in Discover, written in every genre from fantasy and sci-fi to romance and horror. Story Cards hold notes on characters and places that the AI reads when their trigger words come up, the Memory System stores key moments automatically, and friends can join your game in Multiplayer with an eight-digit code. You pick the AI model yourself, from Latitude's own adventure fine-tunes to larger premium models, and the See mode makes images mid-story. AI Dungeon is officially available in English only.

How to play AI Dungeon online on a PC or phone

The website is how you play AI Dungeon on a Windows PC, Mac or Chromebook. Latitude retired its Steam app in early 2024, and its native apps are for phones and tablets. Chrome on Windows and Mac gets Latitude's top level of browser support, Safari on Mac, Edge and Opera come next, and Firefox and Linux browsers get limited support.

1. Open play.aidungeon.com in Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox.
2. Create a free account, or log in. AI Dungeon needs an account to play: your Adventures are stored in the cloud and listed under My Stuff, so you can pick them up on any device.
3. Press Play for a Quick Start, or open Discover and choose a community Scenario.
4. Take a Turn: Do for an action, Say for speech, Story to write the narration yourself, or See to have the AI draw a picture.
5. Steer the story. Continue lets the AI write on without your turn, Retry gives you a new version of the last output, and Edit, Erase, Undo and Redo change anything you want.

AI Dungeon doesn't play offline, because its models run on Latitude's servers. On a phone, use the app or open play.aidungeon.com in your mobile browser, which Latitude recommends whenever the app isn't working.

AI Dungeon login

1. Open play.aidungeon.com and go to the sign-in page.
2. Continue with Google or Apple, or enter the email address and password on your account. Usernames no longer work for logging in.
3. New to AI Dungeon? Create an account and confirm the verification email.

Forgot your password? Use the Forgot Password page. The same link sets a password for your account's email address when a Google or Apple login gives you trouble. If the verification email doesn't arrive, check your spam folder and the address in your Account Settings for typos. Can't remember which email you used? Latitude's support team at support@aidungeon.com can look it up.

Is there an AI Dungeon app?

Yes. AI Dungeon: RPG & Story Maker, from Latitude Inc., is on the App Store for iPhone and iPad and on Google Play for Android, where it has more than 1 million downloads. Both are free with in-app purchases, and your Adventures follow your account between the app and the website.

There's no desktop app. The App Store marks the iPhone app "Not verified for macOS," and the Steam version, which launched in July 2022, was retired in early 2024. Latitude supports its apps on the latest iOS and Android versions. If the app misbehaves, its help guide says to update or reinstall it, clear your browser cache, or play at play.aidungeon.com or the beta site, beta.aidungeon.com.

Is AI Dungeon free? Plans and prices

Yes. AI Dungeon is free to play on every device, and a free account covers all its basic features, without ads. The free tier, Wanderer, gets up to 4K tokens of context, which is how much of your Adventure the AI reads before writing the next turn, and 25 memories in the Memory Bank. Paid memberships add more AI text and image models, more context, more memories and a monthly bundle of Credits for image generation or extra context.

Memberships renew automatically, month to month or for 6 or 12 months at a discount. Journey and Legend come with a one-week trial, and Latitude ends premium benefits as soon as a trial is cancelled. Above Ultimate, Shadow Tiers give the heaviest players the most expensive models at much larger context; they're sold on the web only, as monthly plans. If you subscribed to the old Hero or Champion plan, you're on Journey now with nothing to change.

Pay on the web through Stripe and manage the plan at play.aidungeon.com/pricing, or under Settings → Membership. Subscriptions bought in the iPhone or Android app are managed in the App Store or Google Play.

Is AI Dungeon down?

Check status.latitude.io, the live service status page for AI Dungeon and Voyage, first. A green dot means a system works normally, yellow means it's slower or degraded but running, and red means it's down and Latitude's developers are likely on it. The number in ms beside each system is its current average response time. For news and help, Latitude points players to the AI Dungeon Discord server, where the bugs-feature-requests channel collects reports, and its help guide also links r/AIDungeon and @aidungeon on X.

AI Dungeon age rules and content settings

You must be at least 13 to use AI Dungeon. Latitude's terms of service, last revised 22 April 2026, also restrict certain features to players who have reached the age of majority where they live, typically 18. The App Store rates the app 13+, and Google Play rates it Teen.

AI Safety Settings decide what the AI writes, across your whole account. Safe, the default, prevents sexual, hateful, violent or triggering content; Moderate reduces it; Mature doesn't limit it and asks you to confirm you're 18 or older. Latitude compares the three to PG, PG-13 and R ratings. A separate search filter rates community content Everyone, Teen, Mature or Unrated and starts at Teen. In Multiplayer, the host's settings apply to every player.

Latitude never moderates unpublished, single-player stories, which are private by default and encrypted on its servers. Published Scenarios follow its Community Guidelines and pass an AI rating check before they're published.

Teasa is for ages 13 and up, and its Stories are written by creators with a cast, an opening and quests.
