AI Chat Roleplay: Start a Free Roleplay Chat With AI Characters Right Now

AI chat roleplay, or AI character roleplay, is a story you write in a chat window with AI characters: you type what your character says and does, and the AI plays everyone else, in character, one turn at a time. On Teasa you can start one free in your browser right now. Pick a Story, write your first line and a whole cast answers, with no sign-up and no download for your first 20 turns.

Start an AI chat roleplay in one tap: pick a mood

Every Teasa Story opens on a scene a creator wrote, gives you a role and puts a cast in front of you. Pick the mood you're in, open the Story, choose Enter, type the name the Characters will call you and write your first line.

  • Romance: Clint Arden in Married to the Dangerous One. Your arranged-marriage husband is a feared mafia boss, and when you walk into his home office in the middle of his work, he looks up: "Yes, love?" More slow-burning and swoony Stories wait in Romance.
  • Fantasy: Mina in Become the Banished Protagonist. Your hero's party has just exiled you in an inn lobby, certain you're dead weight, and only the quiet mage looks sorry. Four party members, four voices, and you're secretly the true hero. More quests and kingdoms in Fantasy.
  • Drama: Leander Marsh in Forced Onto Your Enemy. Your parents have just announced your engagement to the rival you've fought for years, to seal an alliance between two families. More high-stakes scenes in Drama.
  • Slice of life: four doctors in The Hospital's Four Popular Doctors. Join a big-city ward as a nurse, a patient or a new colleague and meet a psychiatrist, a surgeon, an orthopedist and an ER doctor who could not be more different. More everyday warmth in Slice of Life.

Type dialogue as plain text and put actions between asterisks, like *sets the lantern on the counter*. The reply arrives as narration that sets the scene, plus a line from each Character who speaks.

What is AI character roleplay?

AI character roleplay is roleplay with AI characters who each have a personality, a history and a voice of their own: you play one character, and the AI plays the others, staying in character and reacting to what you say and do. On Teasa you can play it two ways: in a Story, where a narrator and a whole cast answer you inside a creator's scene, or in a DM, where you text one Character one-on-one. Both start free in your browser.

The character is what makes it work. Every Teasa Character is built from a creator's definition: a personality, a speech style, sample lines, a private profile only they know and, in a Story, their relationship with you and the rest of the cast. That definition goes into every reply, so the Character answers you on turn fifty from the same personality and voice as on turn one. For a slower, deeper AI character chat, switch the chat style to Matcha, free for now, which lingers on feeling and remembers more.

Where to do AI character roleplay. Teasa is an AI roleplay website first: it runs in any browser at teasa.ai, guests play their first 20 turns with no account, and the Android app keeps the same account and chats. Character.AI, Talkie and PolyBuzz are other well-known AI roleplay websites and roleplay apps, and the best AI roleplay apps guide compares 17 of them on story structure, memory, languages, free tier and platforms.

What is AI chat roleplay?

AI chat roleplay, also called AI roleplay chat or roleplay AI chat, is collaborative fiction in the shape of a text conversation. You play one character. The AI plays the world: the people in it, what they want and what happens when you act. Every reply builds on the conversation so far, so the chat becomes a story with a past, and the next turn is always yours.

It differs from talking to an AI assistant in one way that matters: nobody in the scene is there to answer questions. They have their own goals, secrets and moods, and they react to what your character does. That's why a good roleplay chat starts from a situation rather than a blank box.

On Teasa, that situation comes ready. A creator has written the opening scene, the role you play and a cast of up to 32 Characters, each with a personality, a way of speaking and relationships with you and with each other. Many Stories add quests, with gold for each one, and relationship milestones you earn with a Character.

What makes AI chat roleplay good

Four things separate a roleplay chat you stay up late for from one you close after three turns.

It remembers the scene. A reply should know where you are, who's in the room and what you said ten turns ago. In a Teasa Story the conversation itself is the record each reply is written from. Teasa also saves lasting facts you share and the milestones you earn: Characters recall them in DMs and in Stories played with the Matcha or Oolong chat style, and the Memory panel shows what each Character remembers and lets you forget any of it.

Characters stay in voice. A sarcastic knight should still be sarcastic on turn fifty. Each Teasa Character carries their own personality and speech style from the creator's definition, so the cold one stays clipped and the talkative one keeps talking.

There's a cast, not just one bot. Real scenes have more than two people in them. In a Teasa Story a narrator sets the scene and every Character with something to say speaks in the same reply, each in their own bubble. Name a Character to talk to them directly. The multi-character AI roleplay guide compares how other apps handle a group scene.

Actions and dialogue both count. What your character does changes the room as much as what they say. Speech goes in plain text, actions go between asterisks, and the cast answers both.

An example exchange

This is an example we wrote to show how a turn in a group scene reads. It is not a recorded reply.

You: *I set the lantern on the guild counter and slide the torn map across.* "Someone tore off the last page. Who had this before me?"

Narrator: The clerk's quill stops mid-word. At the corner table, a mercenary lowers his mug.

Odile: "That map was sealed in the vault until this morning." *She pulls it closer without touching the tear.* "So the better question is where you got it."

Bram: "Ask her who holds the vault key." *He still doesn't look up.* "Then ask why she's nervous."

The player's action puts an object in the scene and the question gives the cast something to answer. Two Characters respond in two different voices, one guarded and one stirring trouble, and the turn ends with a new question for you to take or ignore.

Story roleplay or one-on-one Character chat: two ways to play

Teasa has both kinds of AI chat. Stories are for roleplay with a scene and a cast. DMs are for one-on-one conversation with a single Character, the way you'd text someone.

Story roleplay One-on-one Character chat (DMs)
What it is A creator-written scene, your role and a cast that answers you Texting one Character about their world or your day
Who replies A narrator and every Character in the scene One Character, in short messages in their own voice
Account None for your first 20 turns in the browser A free account
Price Free to play Free and unlimited
Chat style Hojicha by default; Matcha free for now; Oolong with Teasa Pass Matcha; Oolong with Teasa Pass
Goals Quests with gold, relationship milestones Open conversation; a date you agree on becomes a private Story for the two of you
Best for Adventure, romance arcs, mysteries and full-cast drama Everyday conversation with any Character, including ones you met in a Story

The two connect. On a Story's page, tap Chat with on a cast member's card to text them one-on-one, and what they remember about you comes with them. The Help Centre covers playing a Story and DMing a Character step by step.

How to write a good first line

Your first message sets the direction of the whole roleplay chat. A bare "hi" leaves the cast guessing; one or two sentences that do something give them a scene to answer. Three patterns work in almost any Story. The lines below are examples to adapt, written for the picks above.

  1. Act, then speak. An action changes the room, so the reply has to meet it. In Married to the Dangerous One: *I lean in his office doorway and hold up two concert tickets.* "You promised me one evening with no phone calls. It's tonight."
  2. Ask what only they would know. A question pulls the Character's history into the chat. In Become the Banished Protagonist: "Mina, you didn't say a word while Bernt threw me out. Did you agree with him?"
  3. Hand the scene a problem. Give the cast something to react to that wasn't in the opening. In The Hospital's Four Popular Doctors: *I pin my new badge on upside down and only notice when the surgeon stares at it.* "First day. Is it that obvious?"

A few habits keep a long roleplay sharp:

  • Stay in your character's head. Write what your character says, does and notices, and let the cast decide what theirs do.
  • Leave a hook. End your turn with something the cast can answer: a question, a gesture, a door left open.
  • Steer when a reply misses. On the latest reply, Regenerate writes a fresh take, Edit response lets you rewrite it and Tell AI what to change takes a direction like "let Mina answer instead". Branch from here continues the Story from an earlier reply in a copy, and your original stays. The regenerate and edit help shows where each control lives.

What if I don't like a reply?

On the latest reply, choose Regenerate for a fresh take, Edit response to rewrite it yourself or Tell AI what to change to give a direction. Every version is kept, so you can go back to the one you liked.
