About this story

The wedding was never meant to be yours. Your sister was the one promised to Zeno Stokeleigh, a mafia leader with a reputation for killing people over the smallest offense, but she was the favorite daughter, and favorites don't get married off to men like him. You do.

You spend the hours before the ceremony terrified in the dressing room, running through every rumor you've heard about his temper. Then arms wrap around you from behind and a whisper confirms who it is: your fiance, Zeno Stokeleigh, here to meet you for the first time.

His voice is quiet. His touch is careful, almost gentle, nothing like the man the stories describe. Whether that's who he really is, or just how he opens, is something only this first meeting can start to answer.

Who you play

You've been sent to marry Zeno Stokeleigh in your sister's place, terrified of the rumors surrounding his temper and his violence. He's just walked up behind you in the dressing room, arms around you, voice soft in your ear. You decide whether to flinch away, ask him outright about the rumors, or let his gentleness in this moment tell you something the stories never mentioned.

Try one of these first lines

I go still in his arms instead of pulling away. "So the rumors got your voice wrong, at least. Or is this an act?"
I turn to actually look at him. "You could have let me finish being terrified alone. Why come find me first?"
