How Korean names work

A Korean name is usually a one-syllable family name followed by a two-syllable given name: Kim Seo-yeon is 김서연. Kim, Lee and Park are the most common surnames in Korea. Given names are often built from Sino-Korean characters (hanja), so a name's meaning depends on the hanja a family chooses; the generator shows the Hangul only.

Choosing a Korean name for a character

  1. Keep the order. Korean names put the family name first; in English text many writers keep it that way (Park Ji-ho).
  2. Pick a romanization and stick to it. Lee, Yi and Rhee are the same surname; choose one spelling.
  3. Some names suit anyone. Ji-woo, Ji-min and Yeon-woo are used for all genders.
  4. Titles show closeness. Oppa, unnie, sunbae and -ssi tell readers how two characters relate.

FAQ

Are these real Korean names?

Yes. The family names and given names are common real Korean names, combined at random and shown in Hangul with a common romanization.

What does my Korean name mean?

Korean given names usually come from hanja, and the same sound can be written with different hanja and different meanings. The generator doesn't guess a meaning for that reason.

Why does the family name come first?

That is the Korean order: Kim Seo-yeon. Switch Family name first off for the given-name-first order used in some English texts.

What are the most common Korean surnames?

Kim, Lee (Yi) and Park are the three most common Korean surnames, followed by names such as Choi, Jung and Kang.

Is it free?

Yes. The Korean name generator is free, needs no account and runs in your browser.
