How Chinese names work
A Chinese name puts the family name first, usually one character, then a given name of one or two characters: Wang Haoran is 王浩然. Wang, Li and Zhang are the most common surnames. Given names are chosen for their meaning, so 浩然 is "vast and upright" and 明月 is "bright moon".
| Name | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Mingyue | 明月 | bright moon |
| Haoran | 浩然 | vast and upright |
| Xue | 雪 | snow |
| Long | 龙 | dragon |
| Lin | 林 | forest |
| Gao | 高 | tall |
Choosing a Chinese name for a character
- Let the meaning carry the character. A scholar named Zhiyuan (志远, "far-reaching ambition") tells readers what drives him.
- One or two characters. One-character given names (Xue, Rui) feel crisp; two-character names (Mingyue, Haoran) are more common today.
- Courtesy names for historical settings. In xianxia or palace stories, characters may also carry a courtesy name used by peers.
