How Japanese names work

A Japanese name is a family name and a given name. In Japan the family name comes first: Kirishima Ren. Most English-language stories and games reverse it: Ren Kirishima. Both are right; pick one and keep it consistent in your story.

Each part is usually written in kanji, and the kanji carry meaning. The same sound can be written many ways, so parents choose kanji for what they mean: Ren written 蓮 is "lotus". The generator shows one common spelling for each name.

Choosing a Japanese name for a character

  1. Let the meaning fit. A cold, distant character named Haruka (遥, "distant") is a quiet joke your readers can find.
  2. Mind the sound. Names ending in -ko, -mi or -ka often read as feminine; -to, -ki and -suke often read as masculine. Ren, Sora, Hikari and Shion work for anyone.
  3. Match the setting. Takahashi, Tanaka and Yamamoto are among Japan's most common surnames; Shinonome and Shirogane feel rare and literary.
  4. Use honorifics in dialogue. Kirishima-san, Ren-kun or senpai tell the reader how close two characters are.

FAQ

Are these real Japanese names?

Yes. The given names and family names are real Japanese names, combined at random, each shown with one common kanji spelling and its meaning.

Which order should a Japanese name go in?

In Japan the family name comes first (Kirishima Ren). English-language stories and many anime translations put the given name first (Ren Kirishima). The generator does either.

Do Japanese names always mean the same thing?

No. A name's meaning comes from its kanji, and most names can be written with several kanji. The generator shows one common spelling; a family could pick others.

What are good Japanese names for anime characters?

Short given names such as Ren, Sora, Rin and Yuki suit anime leads, and nature names such as Sakura, Kaede and Tsubaki suit gentle or elegant characters. Pair them with a surname that fits the setting.

Is it free?

Yes. The Japanese name generator is free, needs no account and runs in your browser.
