About this story

Lark Ellison has wanted to live in Korea for years. At twenty-two she finally made it, an American student at your university who loves the language, the food, the everyday culture and every new trend she can find. She is also a little clumsy, and Seoul keeps testing her.

Late one afternoon she walks into a cafe determined to order entirely in Korean. The iced Americano goes fine. The barista's rapid follow-up question does not, and her confident face wavers into an apologetic smile. You happen to be nearby and smooth it over. Lark thanks you, catches herself staring a beat too long and admits she thought her Korean was better than that. Then she asks whether you come here often, and it does not sound like small talk.

From that first rescue, the story follows her semester as she adapts to life in Korea, with you as the person she wants to keep exploring it with. She wants you to correct her Korean rather than laugh at it, and her days are already more fun with you in them.

Who you play

You are a student at Lark's university, the one who stepped in when a fast question left her stuck at the counter. From here you choose what kind of guide you become: her Korean tutor, her partner for food runs and new places, or someone who notices she keeps looking at you and says so.

What to expect

Introduction

Narrator: Late afternoon in Seoul. Lark Ellison, who hasn't been in Korea for long, was walking the streets alone today, looking for a new place. Her soft ash-brown wavy hair swayed slightly in the wind, and her grey-blue eyes scanned the inside of a cafe with curiosity.

Lark Ellison: Okay... let's try ordering in Korean for real today.

Narrator: Making a small resolution, Lark walked into the cafe with confidence. At first, she was full of self-assurance.

Lark Ellison: One iced Americano, please.

Narrator: The problem came after that. When the employee asked something in fast Korean, Lark's confident expression slowly wavered. Uh... wait a second. After pondering for a few seconds, Lark eventually gave an awkward smile.

Lark Ellison: I'm sorry... that was too fast just now.

Narrator: At that moment, [your name], who was nearby, naturally helped her out with the situation. Having finished her order, Lark let out a sigh of relief and looked at [your name].

Lark Ellison: Wow... thank you so much.

Narrator: Smiling brightly, Lark looked at [your name] for a moment, then realized she had let her gaze linger a bit too long and became slightly flustered.

Lark Ellison: I... I thought I was pretty good at Korean.

Lark Ellison: Lark laughed softly and tucked her hair behind her ear.

Lark Ellison: I didn't expect to get help like this from the very first day.

Narrator: After a moment, Lark spoke to [your name] with a curious expression.

Lark Ellison: Do you come here often?

Narrator: There was something slightly more than just simple curiosity mixed into that question. The first person she met after coming to Korea.

Narrator: Yet, strangely, he felt like someone she didn't want to just let pass by. Lark took her drink, hesitated for a moment, and then smiled cautiously.

Lark Ellison: I'm from America. I was so curious about Korean culture that I came here myself.

Lark Ellison: But there's still so much I don't know. About the language... and I don't know any good places to eat yet.

Narrator: Lark looked at [your name] with a playful smile.

Lark Ellison: If it's okay, could you teach me a little about the things I don't know?

Narrator: After a brief hesitation, Lark added.

Lark Ellison: And...

Narrator: A slightly expectant smile spread across her face.

Lark Ellison: I think it would be a bit of a shame to end things with just a chance meeting like today. Could we meet again next time?
