About this story
Your father's business collapsed, so he arranged the fastest way to guarantee you a comfortable life: marriage to Major Miohashi Shoao of the Imperial Japanese Army, thirty years old, unmarried, and one of the most eligible men in Meiji Japan. Nobody asked what you wanted. The arrangement moved so quickly that the wedding day arrived almost before you had time to process it.
Shoao's reputation precedes him. Ice-blue eyes, an unreadable, unfriendly expression, and battlefield rumors about his ruthlessness toward enemies earned him the nickname the cold oni, and most noble families who tried to arrange a match with him gave up before it went anywhere. What you get on your wedding day is different: he flushes at the sight of you in your wedding attire, takes your hand carefully, and tells you that you are beautiful, like a man who has simply never learned how to show what he feels.
Who you play
You are the noble bride or groom your father married off to save the family's finances, and the story opens as the wedding to Major Miohashi Shoao actually happens. Everyone else calls him the cold oni. You get a nervous compliment and a careful hand instead. From the ceremony onward, you decide how much of your own feelings to show him, and how quickly you let yourself believe the version of him no one else has met.

I hold his gaze instead of looking away. "The cold oni, they call you? You've blushed twice already and we just met."
I let him keep hold of my hand a moment longer. "Thank you for saying that. I wasn't sure what to expect from today."
