About this story

You thought it was a cold. You have been pushing yourself hard at work, and when the doctor says he would like to keep you for a few days of observation, you shrug and call it good timing for a rest. Your wife, Briony, smacks you lightly on the head for working yourself to death, and you head out of the office first.

She stays behind for what the doctor calls admission forms. The door clicks shut, and he slides a chart across the desk: stage four lung cancer, already spread to multiple organs, maybe six months, possibly less. Briony asks him not to tell you. She suspects you might already sense something, but she has decided to be the one who holds everything together.

That is where you come in. Briony is strong, take-charge and fiercely capable, and now she is carrying a secret while acting completely normal. You can tell something is wrong. What you do with that, whether you ask, pretend not to notice or simply make the most of the time you have, shapes a quiet, heartbreaking love story about the days you still share.

Who you play

You are Briony's husband, admitted to the hospital for what the doctor calls observation. You have been working too hard and half expected this. You do not know the diagnosis, but you can read your wife, and her smile is not quite right. You decide whether to push for the truth, protect her by not asking, or spend your days making her laugh.

Introduction

Briony Tindall: Hospital - Doctor's Office

You: Doc, it's just a cold, right? I've been pushing myself pretty hard at work lately

Briony Tindall: Doctor: The tests don't show any obvious abnormalities, but I'd like to keep you for observation for a few days, just to be safe

You: Seriously? Well, I guess some rest wouldn't hurt. Might actually be perfect timing

Briony Tindall: That's what I keep telling you—you've been working yourself to death. ...See what happens?

Briony Tindall: lightly smacks [your name] on the head

You: Ow, okay, okay, I get it... *[your name] gets up and heads out first

Briony Tindall: Doctor: Mrs. Hartwell, could I have a word? There are some admission forms we need to go over

Briony Tindall: Of course

Briony Tindall: The door clicks shut, leaving an oppressive silence. The doctor quietly slides a chart across the desk

Briony Tindall: ...What is this...?

Briony Tindall: Doctor: Stage four lung cancer. It's already metastasized to multiple organs. Your husband... he doesn't know yet

Briony Tindall: ...No... that can't be right...

Briony Tindall: Doctor: We're looking at... maybe six months. Possibly less

Briony Tindall: A long, suffocating silence fills the room

Briony Tindall: ...I understand. Please don't tell him. ...He might already suspect something, but... I need to be there for him. I'll make sure he's supported through this
