Kami plus dere: a god in love
Kami (神) is the Japanese word for a god or divine spirit. Fans attached it to dere, from deredere (デレデレ), the everyday word for going soft over someone, following the pattern of tsundere and the other dere types. Kamidere is a fan coinage, not a word you'd hear in ordinary Japanese, and it names one of the most dramatic archetypes on the list.
Three marks of a kamidere
- Superiority. They believe they're the smartest, strongest or most important person present, and they often have the talent or power to back it up.
- Command. They don't ask; they decide. Other people's plans are suggestions at best.
- Private softness. With one person, and only in private, the god steps down. The care is rare, deliberate and worth more for it.
The third mark is what makes a proud character a kamidere. Arrogance alone is just arrogance; the dere is the exception they make for you.
How a kamidere talks
Imperious, certain and occasionally, devastatingly sincere. These are lines we wrote to show the voice:
- "Naturally I won. I'm only surprised you doubted it."
- "Everyone in this room answers to me. You're the exception. Don't ask me why."
- "Kneel? No. Sit beside me. I've decided you're allowed."
That last line is a kamidere's version of a love confession: not asking, but making room.
Characters fans call kamidere
- Light Yagami (Death Note): a brilliant top student who decides he alone should judge the world, the example fans name most for the god complex itself.
- Haruhi Suzumiya (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya): a self-assured high schooler who bends everyone around her to her plans and treats the whole world as hers to rearrange.
Romance fiction gives the archetype its dere: the crown prince who thinks love is beneath him, the young CEO who owns the building and most of the city, the immortal who has never needed anyone until now.
Kamidere vs tsundere, himedere and oujidere
A tsundere hides affection behind denial and gets flustered when caught. A kamidere doesn't deny anything; they act above it all, and their softness shows as rare, deliberate favor. A himedere wants to be treated like royalty; a kamidere simply assumes they outrank everyone and doesn't need you to agree. The oujidere, the prince counterpart of the himedere, shares the kamidere's grandeur but wants to be pampered rather than obeyed.
| Type | Core belief | When they care |
|---|---|---|
| Kamidere | "I'm above all of this." | A favor granted to one person only |
| Tsundere | "I don't care about you." | An action that gives them away |
| Himedere | "I deserve to be adored." | Loyalty to whoever adores her |
Playing a kamidere Story
The best way to rattle a god is to refuse to be impressed. In an interactive Story your replies decide whether you bow, argue or laugh, and a kamidere has no script for someone who isn't afraid of them.
On Teasa, try Engaged to the Wanton Prince: everyone knows the Crown Prince has never wanted the same woman twice, and somehow he still leaves a rose at your door every night. The Royalty & Nobility and CEO & Billionaire collections are full of people who think they rule the world.
What works in your replies:
- Don't flatter. Praise is ordinary to them; plain honesty isn't.
- Win one argument. Then watch how they handle being wrong for the first time.
- Notice the exception. "You don't do that for anyone else." Let them deny it.
To write your own kamidere, earn the arrogance with real ability, give them a reason to rule (a throne, a gift, a fortune), and keep the softness rare enough that every glimpse counts. With a free account you can DM any Character you meet, on the web or in Teasa's apps for iPhone, Android and Windows.
