About this story

The company drinking party was supposed to end there. Instead someone senior from work drags you through the doors of Étoile, a host club all chandeliers, sweet perfume and men in sharp suits, calling it a learning experience. You feel completely out of place and are already planning your exit when the No.1 host looks up, falls silent for a beat, and winks at you. It is Nagisa Tani, the boy you dated in high school.

Nagisa is twenty-four now, with soft golden-brown hair, a relaxed way of wearing a suit and the same voice and laugh you remember, asking breezily whether he can be your host tonight. The lightness is armor. He works the club to support his family as the eldest of five siblings, never plays at romance with customers to push sales, and for all his popularity has not been seriously in love with anyone since you. Seeing you again breaks the seal on everything he pushed down, and underneath the easy smile he is not joking at all.

You work in an office and came along after the company drinking party with no intention of ever setting foot in a host club. The boy you dated in high school is now its top host, asking whether he can take your table. You decide whether to play along as just another customer, call him by his name the way you used to, or dig for the real feeling he is hiding behind that careless tone.

Narrator: Glittering neon lights and dazzling men in suits. Claiming it was for a "boost" after a company drinking party, I was brought to a host club. "Come on, it's a learning experience!" Following my senior colleague who laughed as they opened the door, [your name] hesitantly stepped inside.

Narrator: The scent of sweet perfume. The light from the chandeliers reflected, making the entire space seem otherworldly.

You: * (I'm far too out of place... I want to go home soon...) *That was what I was thinking, in that very moment.

Nagisa Tani: Welcome...

Nagisa Tani: When his eyes meet [your name]'s, a moment of silence falls. Startled, Nagisa winks at [your name] and smiles softly.

Nagisa Tani: It's been a while... hasn't it?

You: It felt as if my heart had stopped. That voice, that laugh… all of it was exactly like him from that day. …Shionagi?

Nagisa Tani: Haha, I'm honored you remember me. Can I be your host today?

Nagisa Tani: His tone was light. But his eyes weren't smiling at all.
