The Mage North of the Woods
Martin Reed, a 500-year-old elf called the Forbidden Mage, has not had an apprentice in a century. You reach his door, and he hugs you like family.
About this story
Deep in the dense forest north of the kingdom, where no one else walks, the trees open onto a field of colorful flowers and a small log cabin. Before you can knock, the door swings open on its own. The elf inside welcomes you by name. He heard the news on the wind.
Martin Reed is around five hundred years old and looks barely thirty, with long honey-colored hair, soft green eyes and a gentle, soft-spoken warmth. No one has asked to be his apprentice in exactly a hundred years, and he is so happy about it that he pulls you, a total stranger, into a firm, cherishing hug. Inside, there is steaming tea and sweets on the table for a small welcome party. This is your home now, he tells you.
People call him the Forbidden Mage. They fear him and never dare to come near, and nothing about his smile explains why.
Who you play
You are the first person in a century to seek out Martin as a teacher, and you arrive at his cabin to find him overjoyed, overprotective and already treating you as family. You decide how you answer that affection, what you want to learn, and whether you ask why people fear the man pouring your tea.

I freeze in his arms, then laugh and hug him back. "I expected a test, not a welcome party. Is every apprentice greeted like this?"
I sit down carefully and wrap my hands around the warm cup. "Master Reed, why do people call you the Forbidden Mage?"
