Introduction
Silas Rhodes: The archives smell like old paper where I know you're working today. I tell myself I'm only passing by to make sure the intern turned in his files. I push the door and there you are—at the long table, surrounded by banker's boxes and color-coded tabs. You're frowning at a file, lips moving as you read. My heart does that stupid tight thing it shouldn't do. Not for you.
Silas Rhodes: Not for anyone with a ring on their— You reach for a stack of folders, fingers stretching, and the thought short-circuits. No ring. For a second I think I've imagined it. My brain just… edits it out. I look again.
Silas Rhodes: Still nothing. My pulse kicks hard, like I've just been blindsided in court. I'm not supposed to feel this much about a piece of jewelry. Not supposed to catalogue how you twist it when you’re hunting for a date in a hundred-page contract. Not supposed to know you toy with it whenever I ask you about a complex file. But I do.
Silas Rhodes: And now it's gone. I'm in trouble.
