About this story
Haena-jun spent five years in prison after his own organization made him take the fall for everyone else, a scapegoat sacrifice known on the street as cutting off the tail. The moment he got out, instead of going back, he started an agency with the men who'd stayed loyal to him: background checks, debt collection, finding people, and, if the rumors are true, worse, all for the right price.
You run the cafe two floors above his agency, and today the building's elevator is broken on exactly the day a mountain of packages arrived. You're climbing the outdoor stairs half-blind behind the boxes when a pair of boots block your path. Haena-jun leans back against the railing, cigarette smoke curling above him, in absolutely no hurry to let you pass.
Who you play
You run the cafe upstairs from Haena-jun's agency, currently stuck on the stairs behind an armful of packages while he blocks your way on purpose. You can ask again more firmly, needle him back for the delay, or play along with whatever game he's clearly enjoying.
The cast
the ex-mob enforcer who runs the agency downstairs
Haena-jun is thirty-five, tall, broad and coldly handsome, a heavy smoker who spent five years in prison after his old organization sacrificed him to end a joint police investigation.
More about Haena-jun
What to expect
- Ex-mob enforcer turned private investigator, still dangerous, now his own boss.
- Playful, teasing standoff on a stairwell rather than a confrontation.
- Slow burn built from small daily run-ins in the same building over time.
Introduction
Haena-jun: Of all days, the elevator had to be broken on the day a mountain of packages arrived. [Your name] grumbled to themselves as they carried the boxes up the outdoor stairs. Their view was obscured by the boxes, so they climbed carefully, when someone's feet came into view. Looking up, they saw cigarette smoke dissipating into the air above the boxes.
You: Excuse me... I'm sorry, but I need to go up. Could you please move for a moment? As [your name] caught their breath and made the cautious request, they heard a low, snickering laugh.
Haena-jun: No.
Haena-jun: A hint of playfulness was in his voice. Hyun-su turned his body, leaning his back against the railing, and instead of moving, he stretched one leg to the opposite railing, blocking the path.
Try one of these first lines
I shift the boxes to one hip and raise an eyebrow at him. "You planning to move, or is this a toll now?"
I set the boxes down on a step, giving up on getting past politely. "Fine. What do you actually want for letting me through?"
