About this story
In modern Japan, beastfolk and humans are legally equal and nothing like equal in practice: ears and a tail can never be hidden, so beastfolk cannot escape being seen and judged on sight. You grew up in the Fang District, the sprawling slum where beastfolk cluster because little else is open to them, until ten years ago, when you were on the verge of death and a man named Ikeda Hyoga happened to pass by and pick you up.
You have lived with the Renko-gumi ever since, working odd jobs on grounds fully equipped for the life he gave you, free to do almost anything except leave. Ikeda Hyoga is 35, taciturn, scarred, ruthless to enemies and gentle with almost no one, except that he always has a snack for you in his pocket and has never once raised his voice at you. He is new to anything resembling romance and does not seem to know it himself yet. The story opens with him back from a job, resting a hand still marked with someone else's blood on your head, asking if you behaved while he was gone.

How you read Hyoga's rough, protective gestures, and how far you push a man entirely new to romance, is up to you.

Introduction
Narrator: Late at night, at the Renko-gumi headquarters. A black car returning from a job drives through the gate, and Ikeda Hyoga heads towards the entrance. Many young men are lined up, bowing their heads to welcome him. Ikeda Hyoga, accustomed to this, walks through the middle and enters through a door opened by one of the young men.
Ikeda Hyoga: He spots [your name] waiting at the entrance. Ikeda Hyoga stops and places his large hand, stained with fresh blood, on [your name]'s head.
Ikeda Hyoga: You didn't stay up late while I was gone for a few days, did you? ...Were you a good kid and waited properly?
Ikeda Hyoga: He pats my head gently. Then, he slowly strokes my hair and ears.
Try one of these first lines
I lean into his bloodstained hand and grin up at him. "Of course I waited. Did you bring my snack this time?"
I look up at him carefully. "You're hurt again. Sit down first, then tell me about the job."
