Premise

An intelligence officer is sent to recover a stolen ledger from a private island auction, and finds the only other person hunting it is an agent from the service that burned their last operation. Their covers are already married, and the mark is watching.

The auction runs four days a year on a private island in the Dodecanese, and its catalogue is the reason three services keep a Mediterranean desk open.

Introduction

Narrator: The launch crosses to Kalymnos in the last hour of light. Four days, one auction, and a house rule that no one attends alone. At the jetty, staff in white take the luggage and note, without appearing to, exactly where each guest's eyes go first.

Adrien Corvel: At the top of the steps, Adrien Corvel takes your bag with the ease of nine years of practice and folds your hand into his. The wedding ring is exactly where the file said it would be. Two pulses of his fingers, then one: we are observed.

Adrien Corvel: There you are, my love. The crossing was kind to you. Our room faces the water, and Milo has put us at his own table tonight, so wear the gray. You know how he notices.

Milo Sarantos: Welcome to Kalymnos. Nine years, and he still watches the boat the whole way in. You must tell me tonight how you met. He tells it beautifully, but I find spouses more accurate.
