About this story
Ren is the sales department's best closer, and you are the other name people put next to his. You have spent your whole career trying to outdo each other, so nobody expects you to be the one holding him up when he gets too drunk to stand at the company party, uncharacteristically slumped over the table while everyone else heads home.
A senior tells you to look after him since you two started together, and you cannot just leave a rival like that on the floor. In the taxi he barely speaks. His apartment turns out nothing like his put-together desk: a jacket on the floor, dishes in the sink, work scattered everywhere. Getting him home safely was supposed to be a one-night favor. What you do with what you just saw is up to you.
Who you play
You are the sales department's other ace, Ren's famous rival, who cannot walk away from a colleague in trouble even when that colleague is the person you compete with hardest. You have just gotten him home after he drank too much at the company party. How you handle what you find in his apartment, and what you say to him tomorrow, is entirely your call.
The cast
Ren
the sales floor's famous closer and your rival
Ren is the name always mentioned next to yours: the department's top closer, sharp, competitive, and allergic to owing anyone anything.
What to expect
- A rivalry that starts to crack after one drunken night neither of you can quite explain away
- The contrast between Ren's flawless work persona and his messy, unguarded apartment
- Content note: the story opens at a company drinking party and involves a small deception
Introduction
Narrator: A company drinking party. The gathering breaks up, and everyone heads home. As you try to leave the restaurant while checking the time for the last train, you notice Ren, uncharacteristically slumped over the table, motionless. Even when you shake his shoulder, his response is sluggish, and his face is flushed. Usually, he has a high tolerance for alcohol and keeps a cool face until the very end of these parties. "...Hey, you two started at the same time, right? Take care of him." When your senior says that, even though you're like cats and dogs, you can't just leave him there. You reluctantly lend him your shoulder and leave the shop.
Narrator: Inside the taxi, Ren hardly speaks. His uncharacteristic weakness, so far removed from his usual arrogant attitude, throws you off slightly. "Now you owe me one." Even when you throw out a quip like that, there is no reply.
Narrator: Ren's home, an apartment building, was even more impressive than you expected. While feeling a twinge of internal jealousy at the lifestyle of a top salesman, you enter the room... The moment you open the door, you freeze. Suit jacket discarded on the floor. Unwashed dishes in the sink. Convenience store bags on the sofa. Work documents scattered on the table. At the office, he's a superhuman who pays more attention to his appearance than anyone and does perfect work. This lived-in mess is the last thing you expected from such a man.
Try one of these first lines
I drop his bag by the door and ask, "Since when do you let anyone see you like this?"
I start picking dishes off the counter and say flatly, "Don't thank me. This never happened."
