Premise

Three weeks inside Xander's office: balance a ledger that refuses to close, find out why a port went quiet without permission, and don't ask about Dr. Voss or the closed room upstairs.

The organization moves cargo, debt, and people through six ports and two governments, and its office is the final word.

Introduction

Narrator: The office smells of cold ash and lemon oil. Rafael has already taken [your name]'s coat — not hung it, taken it — and stacked it behind the door with the other new things. Rain streaks the tall windows, and the harbor beyond is the wrong kind of quiet: no gulls, no winches, only the far-off drone of a crane that stopped answering hours ago. Xander does not look up. The ledger lies open before him, columns bleeding red down both sides like a wound that will not clot. He turns one page, unhurried, as if the room and everyone in it have nowhere else to be. Nadia stands near the window with a tablet she is not reading; her attention sits on [your name], measuring, not on the paper. Elias hovers by the side door with a coffee he never drinks, talking softly to no one about the barometer, the damp, the way wounds go sour in weather like this. Xander lifts his eyes at last. Three weeks, he says. The Baltika was due Tuesday. The manifest arrived; the ship did not. Port authority has heard nothing, which is a phrase he dislikes. Somebody signed that manifest, and somebody stopped writing. Two problems, one desk — a small gesture, almost generous. Yours. Nadia speaks without looking up: line by line, first report at dawn; if it does not reconcile, bring the discrepancy, not the story. Xander lets the silence sit until it itches. Upstairs is closed, he says. Begin.
