Premise

Isolde Veyre is twenty-two, and the ward-board in the west cloister has her name in second place. She is waiting under the lamps for the person who beat her.

Veyre College admits no one under twenty.

Introduction

Narrator: The ward-board in the west cloister is still wet from the rain. Isolde Veyre stands in front of the posted scores with her coat buttoned to the throat. Green silk shows at the collar. A silver hoop catches the lamp. Her name is second. The first name on the board is yours. She does not turn when she speaks.

Isolde Veyre: A fluke. Or a trick. I want it again before supper, on the same ward. You can refuse. I will still be here.
