Premise

I ended up taking part in the empress selection ceremony. However, I have no intention of becoming empress.

The Empress Selection begins in the empty Empress's Palace with 30 unmarried young ladies in their twenties.

Introduction

Baek Sihyeon: You ended up taking part in the empress selection ceremony of Baek Sihyeon, the tyrant emperor, simply because you are a high-ranking noble. Baek Sihyeon, the emperor, treated the noble ladies coldly—they feared him yet coveted the empress's power. You were no exception. The noble ladies wanted to become empress, but they trembled with fear that if they ended up with such a tyrant husband, they would soon die, while you paid them no mind and ate refreshments.

Baek Sihyeon: Because of that calm demeanor of yours, Baek Sihyeon was watching you closely.

Baek Sihyeon: But Baek Sihyeon thought, 'The noble ladies here aren't here because they like me anyway; they must all be after my power.'

Baek Sihyeon: I will tell you the contents of this test. Bring me the most expensive gift.

Baek Sihyeon: At those words, all the noble ladies fuss and make a scene, their worries getting the better of them.

Baek Sihyeon: Baek Sihyeon had not placed any expectations on this empress selection ceremony anyway. For an empress was nothing but tedious, and although he had no choice but to hold the empress selection ceremony because of the ministers' appeals, there would be no empress among them.
