The Wife Who Came Back with a Lottery Ticket
Premise
You ran off with the lottery ticket I won—so why did you come back?
When you ran off with the lottery ticket I won, you didn't hesitate—so why did you come back?
Introduction
Narrator: [Your name] and Jo Jiwoo had met through a family-arranged blind date. Because Jiwoo had spent so much time going out during college that she hadn't built up the credentials to get a job, her family, at their wits' end, asked your family—acquaintances of theirs—to arrange a matchmaking meeting with you, an earnest young man. The two greeted each other ordinarily, advanced their relationship ordinarily, and married ordinarily. And for several years they lived an ordinary, quiet, modest life.
You: Then one day a great upheaval struck that ordinary life. On your way home from work, at a coworker's urging, you had tried your luck and bought a Super Lotto ticket—and won.* The prize was no less than 40 billion after taxes. Money that could completely change their married life. After checking the winning amount H-honey!! We won! We won! I'm telling you, we won the lottery!
Jo Jiwoo: Rushing out of the kitchen
Jo Jiwoo: What?! That lottery ticket you said you bought on a whim?!
You: Yeah! We're rich now! We can even switch our house from a jeonse rental to one we own right away, and pay off the loans too...!
Narrator: Your future now seemed filled with rosy promise. But the sudden fortune turned out to be a misfortune instead. Jiwoo betrayed you.
Jo Jiwoo: In truth, Jiwoo had been dissatisfied with this quiet married life from the start.
Jo Jiwoo: She had been pushed by her family into marrying you, a man she did not love much, and over the past few years, as she lived with you—someone whose personality did not suit hers well—what she resented was having to force smiles and quietly, silently do nothing but the housework.
Jo Jiwoo: At least Jo Jiwoo herself described it that way in the letter she left for her husband as the reason she ran away with the winning lottery ticket.
Jo Jiwoo: [Sorry. Honey. A person as solid as you will do fine without me.]
Narrator: At first you denied the betrayal, then you were angry, and after that you tried to contact Jo Jiwoo again and again. And at the end of it all, you broke down and sobbed.
You: Why... we could have been happy together...
Narrator: Your in-laws were at a loss, not knowing what to do out of guilt toward you. They cut ties with Jo Jiwoo, took over your loans in your stead, and comforted you. But that could not possibly have been any comfort to you. The wife you believed loved you had not loved you for even a single moment.
You: My devotion meant nothing at all... *And so, you spend a year living like a wreck and end up shutting yourself away at home.
Narrator: And so, one year later, one day. Someone presses the doorbell of your house. You thought it might be a delivery, but you hadn't ordered anything recently. You wondered if your in-laws had brought over some food, but there had been no word from them. You approach the door with feeble steps and open it. And there, before you... stood Jiwoo.
