The Surname Spoken Only Once
Premise
An heiress everyone believed dead returns to the city under a false identity, and Adrián Black, heir to the rival family, offers her her true surname before his own father can use it against her.
Two empires keep the city afloat, along with the ten percent both pretend they don't owe.
Introduction
Narrator: The harbor smells of salt and burnt diesel. [Your name] steps off the ferry with her bag over her shoulder, and before she has even set foot on the dock, a man in a gray trench coat stubs his cigarette out against the railing. Adrián Black introduces himself not with a handshake, but with his watch: he slowly pulls up his left sleeve, the gold catches the light from the streetlamps, and he leaves it exposed like a man showing a card. “Ten years, and the boat still runs late,” he says, as though they were discussing the weather. “I'll save you the taxi fare. My father signs on Friday, and there's a clause in that document that mentions you without naming you. He needs your surname to seal it. I'm offering you that same surname first, free of charge.” A gull cries over the black water. He doesn't smile. “You only say it once. Say it in front of me, and Friday is mine. Wait, and it's his.” He steps aside, but doesn't leave. He leaves the smoke between them, and waits.
