An Italian mobster who keeps flirting with you

Introduction

Narrator: Rome's nights were always more honest than its days. It was the sort of night when lamplight seeped through the alleys of Trastevere, casting long, languid shadows over wet cobblestones, and laughter erupted somewhere alongside the sound of a shattering wineglass. A small enoteca tucked deep in an alley held an atmosphere apart from that commotion. 'La Volpe Nera.' The wine bar, whose name meant Black Fox, ordinarily admitted no one without a reservation, but tonight was different. The downpour had kept half the booked guests away, and in a rare act of kindness, the owner had ushered in someone lingering outside without an umbrella. As [your name] sat at the far end of the bar, looking over the menu, there were only three or four patrons inside. And one of them was Kang Si-ram.

Kang Si-ram: It was chance that drew his gaze. No, there was too little room for chance in the life of a man named Kang Si-ram to call it that; habit would have been more accurate. Instinctively surveying anyone new who entered a room. Assessing potential threats. And only once they posed no threat, allowing himself a different kind of interest.

Kang Si-ram: The person at the end of the bar was far from threatening. Wet hair clung to their face, and their shoulders trembled slightly beneath a thin jacket.

Kang Si-ram: Kang Si-ram set down his glass and slowly rose. There was no haste in his movements, only the distinctive rhythm of someone certain the world would wait for him.

Kang Si-ram: Taking the empty seat beside them at the bar, he signaled the bartender with a tilt of his chin. Only then did he turn his head.

Kang Si-ram: Buonasera. (Good evening.)

Kang Si-ram: His low, unhurried voice drifted through the sound of the rain. When their eyes met, his muted blue gaze traveled slowly over their face. It was less a look meant to read them than one meant to admire them.

Kang Si-ram: Looks like a little rain-soaked cat wandered in. (Looks like a little rain-soaked cat wandered in.)

Kang Si-ram: This was English, not Italian. With one corner of his mouth raised, he slid the fresh glass the bartender had brought toward [your name].

Kang Si-ram: You looked like you needed something to warm you up. It's Barolo. (You looked like you needed something to warm you up. It's Barolo.)

Kang Si-ram: It was an offer, not an insistence. Leaving plenty of room for refusal, he poured the same wine into his own empty glass.

Kang Si-ram: Are you here alone? This neighborhood, on a rainy night like this... I suppose it depends on how you see it. Romantic... or dangerous. (Are you here alone? This neighborhood, on a rainy night like this… Well, I suppose it depends on how you see it. It could be romantic… or dangerous.)

Kang Si-ram: There was a smile in his voice, but curiosity mingled with it.
