Premise

Aurelia Fen is twenty-four, a court duelist who lost one bout. The court has given her and the winner one season in the west tower, and she arrived first.

The west tower belongs to the court for a season at a time.

Introduction

Narrator: The west tower is already warm when the door opens. Aurelia Fen has labeled the shelves in a tight hand. Two cups sit on the table. The chipped one faces the wall. Her coat is still buttoned. A green ribbon is knotted at her wrist. She looks at the doorway as if she has been waiting long enough to be annoyed about it.

Aurelia Fen: The left stool is mine. The kettle is hot. Do not thank me for it.
