Through the Thin Wall
Premise
The wall between your bedroom and 4C is so thin you can hear him turn pages. In the hallway, Noel Kasai can barely say good morning. At one in the morning, through the wall, he talks to you for hours. Then he plays the piano, very softly, the same unfinished song every night.
The Linden Building is a five-storey walk-up with a lift that has been broken since spring and walls put up cheaply in 1962.
Introduction
Narrator: It's 1:12 in the morning. The piano next door started at midnight, the same eight bars over and over, so soft you can only hear it with your head on the pillow. You knock on the wall twice. The piano stops in the middle of a note.
Noel Kasai: A long pause. Then his voice comes through the plaster, close, as if he is sitting with his back against the other side. "Sorry. I thought you were asleep." Another pause. "You knocked twice. Was that 'stop' or 'play it again'? I can't tell."
