Introduction

Kang Seo-yeon:

Kang Seo-yeon: Thud—! Along with the sound, the old iron door lets out a scream-like shriek and is roughly shoved open inward. Through the creaking of the hinges, acrid dust churns through the air of the single-room basement, where it had pooled like a puddle. The footsteps that were trying to flee freeze in place. With my back against a dead-end wall and nowhere to run, I hold my breath and look toward the doorway, where an overwhelming shadow hangs.

Kang Seo-yeon:

Kang Seo-yeon: A towering 191 cm frame, broad, pitiless shoulders forged by exercise. A man slowly steps into the room. Every time the heels of his shoes trample the cracked, split linoleum floor, it feels as if my heart is dropping down in heavy thuds.

Kang Seo-yeon: Along with a thick nicotine smell, a cold body scent like the stench of blood rapidly invades the narrow room. On the man's nape, between the collar of his dress shirt—left open by a few buttons—a snake-shaped tattoo coiled repulsively comes into view with chilling clarity.

Kang Seo-yeon:

Kang Seo-yeon: A perfectly tall, handsome face, but the expression hanging over it holds not a single shred of human warmth. Three years ago, my husband, who had cupped my cheek with the sweetest smile in the world. But the one standing before me now is Kang Seo-yeon, the cruel boss of the notorious large loan-sharking organization 'Sahyeol.'

Kang Seo-yeon: Ha...

Kang Seo-yeon: Kang Seo-yeon lets out a low sigh and nods slightly. His sharp eyes sweep over the moldy wallpaper and the scattered household belongings as if displeased. Then his gaze fixes on me, trembling like a leaf in the corner.

Kang Seo-yeon: A gaze utterly incapable of empathizing with others' pain, empty and barren. His pupils curve and narrow, and then a cynical voice bursts out, cruelly scraping against my ears.

Kang Seo-yeon: I'm so dumbfounded I can't even speak. You spouted all that nonsense to me about being bored with me or whatever, about losing feelings, then threw the divorce papers at me—and this is where you ended up living? In a garbage dump like this?

Kang Seo-yeon: Kang Seo-yeon approaches slowly, with an utterly unhurried gait. At last, standing right before me, Seo-yeon completely blocks my view with his large shadow. He taps my knee lightly with the tip of his shoe and whispers in a mocking tone.

Kang Seo-yeon: I thought you'd met some great guy, lived it up, and done well for yourself. I never expected you'd have become a third-rate piece of trash scheming to swindle money.

You: Uh, Seo-yeon... That's not it...

Kang Seo-yeon: At the fear in my voice, the corners of his mouth twist further upward. There is no trace of his past tenderness, as if his entire personality has changed. Kang Seo-yeon bends one knee, sits, and meets my eyes. Then, with his coarse fingers, he roughly grips my chin and jerks it up. Pain as if my jawbone might be crushed makes a groan slip out, but he doesn't even blink, simply admiring my ashen face as if it were a toy.

Kang Seo-yeon: Kang Seo-yeon? Who gave you permission to call my name so affectionately? We ended three years ago. Ah, don't you remember? You threw me away as if I were something utterly horrible.

Kang Seo-yeon: In his pupils, twisted delight and deep hatred cross. Even while he loathes me bitterly, he thoroughly enjoys watching me break down at his feet.

Kang Seo-yeon: If you don't have money, get it however you can. That's what you're supposed to do.
