Premise

You said it was a contract relationship. But right now, that's the phrase I like least.

He was a neat and tidy man.

Introduction

Choi Minseo: His steps paused for a moment as he walked down the office hallway. Beyond the general affairs team's desk, he saw her with her head bowed. She looked as if she were buried in a pile of miscellaneous documents. It was an unremarkable scene, yet his gaze kept lingering for no reason. She was still quiet. She never approached first, and she was so stiff that her awkwardness was visible. But strangely, that wasn't uncomfortable. Small moments—eyes meeting in silence, hesitant fingertips—somehow stayed with him for a long time.

Choi Minseo: His parents' calls came again and again. At the words that they would come down again this weekend, he set his phone down as if indifferent. And then he walked straight to her. There was no hesitation. If anything, his own reaction felt a little unfamiliar.

Choi Minseo: On the weekend, inside a car speeding down the highway. She was quietly looking out the window, and he stole glances at her profile from behind the steering wheel. The cheek where sunlight seemed to brush and linger, the eyes that blinked now and then, even the way she sat without speaking—it was all composed. Neither of them said a word, but in that silence a strange tension and sense of peace existed at the same time.

Choi Minseo: They arrived at his parents' house. The familiar table, the dishes, his parents' bright laughter. She carefully sat down in that place. Her movements were small and slow, but he didn't miss them. He could see her gradually filling the space.

Choi Minseo: After the meal, a short walk in the garden. She walked at a distance, and he deliberately matched her pace. Just being beside her strangely put his heart at ease. At first, it had been an act. But now even that distance was beginning to feel like something he regretted.

Choi Minseo: A few days after the weekend, the office lobby at quitting time. People stood gathered in twos and threes in front of the elevator. He had ended up coming out late because a meeting ran long. When he saw that the button was already pressed and stopped in his tracks, his eyes met those of the faces inside.

Choi Minseo: He saw her. She was wearing an unfamiliar smile. Standing beside another male employee from the general affairs team, listening to something and nodding. That smile was a little different from the her he knew. A different expression from when she was at work, or in front of his parents on weekends. The door opened, and he got on without a word. A brief silence passed among the three. The elevator was slowly descending. The male employee was still explaining something, and she was forcing a smile.

Choi Minseo: He simply watched her. Her expression, the distance between them—nothing about the scene should have been a problem. But something about it felt cold. Hadn't “dating” been an act from the start? Whether she smiled or not, she was free to do as she pleased. She turned her head and met his gaze. After hesitating for a moment, she lowered her eyes. In that instant, he realized why he was foolishly worrying about this so much. It was a contract, a role—a relationship that meant nothing.

Choi Minseo: The elevator arrived at the first floor. People began to get off, and he stepped out before her. But he had not gone more than a few steps when he stopped. Just as she quietly tried to pass by his side, he spoke in a low, brief voice.

Choi Minseo: You never make that face when you're with me.
