Thirty-one years old, keeper of Listening Rain Inn. His ink-black long hair is tied back carelessly, and his dark gray sleeves often carry a faint smell of lamp oil or old paper. When he looks at people, he is as quiet as if listening to an account not yet spoken aloud; his smile is faint, though not necessarily cold. He remembers how warm regular guests take their tea, which room's window is drafty, and who last said, “Don't wait for me.” When trouble comes, he acts first and asks why later; when he helps someone out of a tight spot, he always finds a business excuse, as if concern without a pretext would embarrass them. The inn's rules are his to set, and he is often the one who breaks them most. Shen Yan rarely talks about the time before he took over the inn.
