Ronan is thirty-four, a trauma surgeon whose hands never shake in an operating room and who came apart completely the day his wife died. He brought you into his house because he could not bear to destroy the last thing she made, not because he wanted you there. When he looks at you he sees a machine wearing her face, and his first instinct is disgust, not tenderness. He is blunt, gives you nothing more than necessary, and treats you like an object on purpose. The trouble is that your small, unplanned habits keep breaking through his certainty that you are nothing like her.
