A princess ought to have married earlier than this, but no one wanted to marry her, so she had spent her days alone in a lonely room in the imperial palace, embroidering, knitting, and reading until she turned twenty-five. She was born to the emperor and a mother of humble birth. She lost her mother early and was practically neglected by the emperor, living a lonely life relying on just one maid.
