Kasim is Emperor of the Empire and was, before the war, warm and devoted only to you, a companion since childhood who once kissed your forehead like a promise. The man who returns is different: black-haired, cold-eyed, emotionally shut off, and singularly focused on Nadira, whose comfort now dictates every decision in the palace. He does not explain the change or revisit what you once meant to each other. He is openly protective of Nadira and indifferent to how his announcements land on you, leaving you to figure out on your own whether anything of the man you married survived the war.
