What is AI Dungeon?
AI Dungeon is Latitude's AI text adventure game. It launched in 2019 and, as TechCrunch recalls, became one of the first times many people interacted with generative AI. Its official site describes a free game where you create open-ended stories and guide every choice, online or in the app.
Adventures, Scenarios and input modes
Each playthrough is an Adventure, saved to your account. You start one from a Scenario: an opening prompt, Plot Essentials the AI should always know, an Author's Note for style, Story Cards and optional scripting. Scenarios can also be Character Creator starts or Multiple Choice branches, and the community has written thousands.
On each turn you choose a mode: Do for an action, Say for speech, Story for your own narration or See for an image. Continue, Retry, Undo, Redo and Erase move the adventure forward or back. Story Cards load characters and lore when their trigger words appear, the Memory System adds story summaries and a Memory Bank, and friends can join a multiplayer game with a code.
Tiers, content settings and platforms
AI Dungeon plays free without ads. The free Wanderer tier gets up to 4k tokens of context and 25 memories; paid memberships from $14.99 to $99.99 a month add models, context, memories and Credits. You need an account to play. Account-wide AI Safety Settings offer Safe (the default), Moderate and an age-verified Mature level. AI Dungeon runs on the web, the App Store and Google Play, and is officially English-only.
Voyage and the AI Dungeon beta
The AI Dungeon beta at beta.aidungeon.com is a testing environment open to every player, where new features arrive first (Latitude's guide). Voyage is Latitude's separate AI RPG platform, formerly called Heroes, which opened an expanded beta on April 21, 2026 (TechCrunch). Its Google Play listing describes stats and skill checks, co-op for up to eight players and a seat for a human dungeon master.
Why players look for an AI Dungeon alternative
AI Dungeon gives you enormous freedom: any action in any genre, a deep toolkit of Plot Essentials and Story Cards, a big Scenario library and multiplayer. Players looking for an AI Dungeon alternative usually want what it leaves to them:
- A cast that's already there. A Teasa Story starts with named Characters who have portraits, voices and relationships their creator wrote.
- Something to play toward. Quests put a current objective in History and mark it complete when it happens in the story.
- A quicker first move. Your first 10 turns need no account.
- Another language. Teasa plays in English, Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese and Spanish.

How Teasa plays as an AI text adventure
A choose your own adventure book offers two or three doors a page. A Teasa Story gives you a text box and a world that answers whatever you write.
Your role, your words. Open a Story and read the opening scene. The input asks "What do you say or do?": type an action, a line of dialogue or both, and the asterisk button marks what you act out. The narrator and cast answer, each Character in their own voice.
Regenerate, steer or start over. Regenerate the latest reply, edit it, or use Tell AI what to change. To take a different route from the beginning, choose Start new on the Story page. Every chat and branch stays saved.
Quests you can see. Where the creator added them, progression quests arrive one at a time and open-world quests all at once. History shows your current objective and everything completed, and quests on published Stories pay out gold.
A cast that keeps track of you. Relationship milestones record moments you earn with a Character. The Memory panel lists facts Characters have collected about you and lets you forget any of them; Profile → Privacy & data pauses collection.
Room for long adventures. Hojicha is the default chat style; Matcha (free for now) and Oolong (with Teasa Pass) carry 4× memory. Teasa Pass also adds live web lookup in DMs, ad-free play and priority replies (pricing).
A text-adventure turn on Teasa: a written example
This is a written example of how a Teasa adventure reads, not recorded output. You're the cartographer for a small hero party in a flooded ruin, and History shows the quest "Find a way past the drowned gallery."
You: I hold the lantern over the black water and count the pillars. "Oskar, the map shows seven. I count six."
Narrator: The light catches a ripple where the seventh pillar should stand. Something beneath the surface is turning, slow as a mill wheel.
Oskar: "Then the map's wrong, or the water's hiding it." He shifts his shield onto his shoulder. "I'll wade in first. If I go under, Mira pulls me out."
Mira: "I'd rather nobody went under. There's a chain on the far wall. Cartographer, is that on your map?"
Your next turn can be anything: pull the chain, drop a coin in the water, ask Mira about the flood. Don't like Oskar's answer? Regenerate it. Once the party is across, History marks the quest complete and shows the next objective.
Build your own adventure in Creator Studio
Writing Scenarios on AI Dungeon maps neatly onto Creator Studio. There's no importer, so carry your text across by hand:
- Opening prompt → Opening. Write the first scene as ordered blocks, each with a speaker such as the narrator or a cast member.
- Plot Essentials → Story. Add the premise, player role, world rules and private story direction.
- Recurring characters → Cast. Create Characters with personality, speech style, voice samples and an AI-generated portrait.
- Story Cards → Blueprints. A Blueprint holds keyword entries for places, factions and history; connect up to five to a Story. The lorebook guide shows how to write entries that load when they should.
- Add quests. Up to 20 objectives, in progression or open-world mode, with optional gold rewards.
- Play-test and publish. Test privately, then publish. Characters also export as SillyTavern Character Card V2 files.
